Prior to the skatepark’s construction, Granahan Playground in West Philadelphia housed an under-utilized roller hockey rink similar to Pop’s Playground. A local community leader approached SkatePhilly with the idea of turning this neglected rink into a skatepark and she rallied support from many of her fellow community members.
Students from the Charter High School for Architecture and Design helped create a proposed design for the space which was met with unanimous support from the community. Thanks to a grant from Councilman Curtis Jones, Granahan Skatepark became a reality and was officially opened on Go Skate Day 2017.
